Join us for our December Trimontium TalkTill Death Us Do Part: Roman Cemeteries & the Mystery of Trimontium’s Mausolea with Dr John Reid

The Romans invested as much skill and design in their internment arrangements as they did in their other engineering projects. We know that many tombs, even on the periphery of the empire, show a high level of ornamentation and careful planning. We can predict that over the decades of its occupation, dozens of soldiers and their families will have passed away at Trimontium…so why after more than a hundred years of research, has not a single tomb or gravestone been discovered?

This talk will take a general look at the ingenious and often formulaic arrangements for Roman burials and then consider in more detail where Trimontium’s missing mausolea might be.

Dr Reid is Chairman of the Trimontium Trust and author of “The Eagle and the Bear”. He led the groundbreaking archaeological investigations at Burnswark Hill in 2016.
