Io Saturnalia! The liveliest of Roman festivals took place in mid-December and were dedicated to Saturn, the Roman god of time, abundance, periodic renewal and liberation – and at the Trimontium Museum, we are celebrating the last day of museum opening for 2023 in true Roman style!
Join us for a day of feasting, celebration of a successful year and merry making. Not only will our Roman citizens be on hand to tell you about Roman saturnalian traditions – which are very similar to our Christmas ones – we will have festive treats on hand for our visitors as they peruse our museum, crafts and Roman games for the kids, saturnalian dress up and Roman dance performances. You can even make your own saturnalia hat to fit in with our Romans!
Our Roaming Roman- Harry will also be joining us over the festive season, as our very own King of Saturnalia
Our museum shop is full of festive cheer too, filled to the brim with unusual Christmas gifts with a distinctly Roman theme
This is the last day we are open this year, after a truly successful 2023, with more visitors than ever before in our 30 year history, as well as achieving full museum accreditation, a Best Visitor Attraction Thistle Award and an Inspire Award for our young volunteers. Come and celebrate with us!
All activities are included in the usual museum admission fees.
