Explore the Trimontium Collections
With the support of the National Lottery Heritage Fund, The Digital Romans Project was developed from 2022 to 2024. The project had two main objectives.
The first objective was to create a digital home for “all things Trimontium,” which includes the Trimontium material managed by National Museums Scotland, Live Borders, Historic Environment Scotland, and our own collection. This material comprises artefacts, high-quality replicas, and archives. For the past two years, we have been digitally cataloguing our museum’s entire collection and working with the organisations above to bring the majority of Trimontium-related materials under one digital platform.
Our online collection now boasts over 4,000 entries, which are continuously enhanced with additional photography and research. This collection is catalogued and published in an integrated system, making it accessible to researchers, students, and the general public. This resource promotes accessibility by providing the entire collection in digital format, even when the physical items are housed in different organizations. Our online exhibits offer an opportunity to share the Trimontium story through its artifacts and documents locally and globally.
The second objective of the project was to create a variety of digital learning resources built from the foundation of the digital catalogue. In particular, we worked with UPMO to co-create a package of digital learning resources for people with learning disabilities. Additionally, we partnered with Museums for Digital Learning to develop learning resource kits for schools.
Our online exhibits are hosted by the CatalogIt Hub.

It can also be enjoyed remotely and it is an excellent introduction to the Trimontium story.
Intaglios: Art in Miniature at the Edge of Empire
The Trimontium collection of intaglios: one of the largest in Scotland.
Intaglios were a cornerstone of Roman luxury jewellery. They were delicately carved gemstones used in Roman finger rings. They are a testament to the high quality of work done by Roman artisans, on a minuscule scale. The Romans adopted and improved Greek techniques, applying them on a greater variety of stones and gems. Intaglios were personal objects: amulets, markers of status and symbols of identity…
