Trimontium Museum has lots to do for the younger legionaries in your cohort! Find out what activities we offer for children.

All of these activities are included in your ticket price. Our shop is packed with things for kids, too, with unique products for all ages and budgets and a fantastic range of kids’ history books.

  • Search for members of a lost legion with a treasure hunt throughout the gallery
  • Give coin offerings (provided by us) to your favourite display, just like the Romans would have done
  • Try out Roman shields, swords, helmets and headpieces in our dress up corner
  • Get crafty with a rotating series of DIY crafts, including making your own Roman helmet, Roman coin, or seasonal craft
  • Track down all traces of animals hiding in our objects, from 2,000 year-old dog paw prints to our resident mouse
  • Make little details pop with magnifying glasses and torches
  • All kids receive a sticker and, if your family’s commanding officer allows it, a lollipop

If you have any questions about visiting with your family, please don’t hesitate to get in touch and we will be happy to help.

Are there any age restrictions?

There are no age restrictions for visiting the museum gallery. Children are welcome at our 2 new experiences: The Trimontium Experience is suitable for children aged 8 and over, due to the themes of bloodshed and cruelty. Hands on History is suitable for children aged 5 and over – they love getting their hands on real Roman objects! All children must be accompanied by an adult during these experiences.

Is there a charge for very young children?

There is no charge for children aged 4 and under. Our activities are suitable for younger children – they love the crafts!

What facilities are there for babies?

Buggies can be taken into the museum, although you are welcome to store them in the reception area if you wish. Changing facilities are located in our unisex toilets. The nearest ChangingPlaces.org facilities are at the Galashiels Transport Interchange.

We have seats all around the museum and gallery if you wish to breastfeed during your visit. If you would like a private space, please ask at reception and we will be happy to help.

Are there accommodations for neurodivergent children?

We offer sensory back packs on request, subject to availability, to assist our young visitors who may find the museum environment challenging. The pack includes fidget toys, ear defenders, a Roman figure, and other activities to engage and entertain. Please email info@trimontium.co.uk if you’d like to book a sensory backpack for your visit. You can find out more about our accessibility provisions here.

Can we keep learning and crafting after our visit?

Absolutely! We’ve got a growing number of resources available via our Learning pages, including downloadable activities. These are free to download and full of great activities for after your visit.

What other family-friendly things are there to do in Melrose?

Melrose has got lots of great shops, playpark, picnic areas and a brilliant ice cream shop just down the road from us. We highly recommend a stop at Simply Delicious after (and possibly before) your visit!
