For over three centuries, the inhabitants of North Britain faced the might of Rome, resulting in some of the most extraordinary archaeology of the ancient world.

In this 12-part course, we shall explore the complex, often tumultuous and frequently brutal interaction between the world’s first intercontinental superpower and the peoples who lived beyond Hadrian’s Wall.

Over three months, we shall consider why the Romans came north and why they stayed, investing heavily in manpower and the logistics necessary to support it, while creating not one but two massive walls to separate the Romans from what they called ‘the barbarians’.

We will also cover in detail several contentious areas of Roman Iron Age scholarship of the land we now call Scotland. Topics such as why so many Roman emperors took a personal interest in this far-flung corner of the empire and why details such as the loss of the Ninth Legion, the Roman siege of Burnswark Hill and the real reasons behind the building of Hadrian’s Wall still excite heated controversy.

WHEN: Wednesday evenings from January 6th to March 25th, 7 – 9 pm (UK). ⚠️ Please note: The first session will take place on Tuesday 6th January; afterwards all sessions will be held on Wednesdays.

FAQ

How is the course delivered?

The course is delivered live online via Zoom each week.

What if I can’t attend a live session?

No problem at all. Every session is recorded, and all participants receive access to the recordings to watch at their own pace.

Can I still ask questions if I’m not attending live?

Yes! You can submit questions by email, and Dr Reid will address them either during the next live session or by replying to you directly.
You’ll also have the option to join our dedicated Facebook group, where you can discuss topics with other participants, and take part in the three Facebook Live Q&A sessions for additional opportunities to ask questions and engage — entirely optional, but available if you wish to join in.

Can I become a member to receive the discounted rate?

Yes, absolutely. New members are welcome, and membership also includes access to our monthly Trimontium Talks (live and online, with recordings), plus many other benefits. You can become a member here: https://www.trimontium.co.uk/online/memberships/
