Back to Burnswark! with Dr James O’Driscoll
Dr James O’Driscoll is Lecturer in Geospatial Archaeology at the University of Glasgow and an experienced field archaeologist with a particular interest in the hillforts of the Bronze and Iron Ages.
Working in collaboration with Trimontium Trust, Dr O’Driscoll has been involved in renewed investigations of the enigmatic hillfort at Burnswark Hill, long associated with one of the most intriguing episodes of Roman-Iron Age interaction in Britain. Flanked by Roman camps on either side, the hill has been the focus of archaeological debate for generations and remains one of Scotland’s most remarkable archaeological landscapes.
In this talk, Dr O’Driscoll will reveal the discoveries from the 2025 and 2026 field seasons, sharing new insights into the archaeology of the site and the questions that continue to surround it. He will also look ahead to future investigations and the directions this research may take in the years to come.
A timely update on one of Scotland’s most significant archaeological sites and the latest chapter in our understanding of Burnswark.
