Book-ending our spring and summer theme of indigenous Iron Age settlement, we move much further south to a zone that almost certainly encountered the might of Rome. When it comes to the superlatives of indigenous fortifications, nothing quite matches the hillforts of Wessex. Niall Sharples has carried out investigations and excavations in this amazing landscape for decades, and his publications and conclusions have challenged some cherished preconceptions of how these massive structures operated in times of peace and war.
