In our candlelit gallery, hear local tales of hauntings, horrors and strange traditions stretching back across two millennia, guided by our fantastic storytellers, Nicola Agricola and the ghostly apparition of a Roman soldier — a restless spirit from the world of Trimontium who may have a few tales of his own to tell…

Do the footsteps of Roman soldiers still echo across Newstead after dark, nearly two thousand years after they left? What did the Romans believe happened to the restless dead — and why did they perform the eerie rituals of Lemuria? What secrets might still lie beneath the Eildon Hills, where Thomas the Rhymer was said to have encountered the Fairy Queen? Vampire monks… haunted abbeys… And what of the museum itself? Could some of its ancient objects have brought a few spirits along with them?
