Join us for our August Trimontium Talk! In Small Things Forgotten (at Newstead) with Professor Stuart Campbell.
The title of this talk is taken from a ground breaking archaeology book written by James Deetz in 1977, In Small Things Forgotten: An Archaeology of Early American Life, which showed how objects can be used to understand the past in ways that were never written down. The metal detector survey we have carried out at Newstead has produced a multitude of small objects (and some not so small) that help us understand some of the ways in which people have used the fields where the fort of Trimontium is located. Sometimes this adds information otherwise lacking in the written record from previous fieldwork at the site.
This talk selects some of these objects and starts to tease out some of the stories they can help us understand.
