Trimontium Museum

Welcome to our award winning museum, which tells the story of the Romans in the Scottish Borders and their relationship with the local population. Pre-dating Hadrian’s Wall, and being one of the largest fort sites in Scotland, Trimontium has produced a wealth of important archaeological finds that shine a light into the Roman era in Scotland including:

  • Military equipment and weaponry including stunning cavalry masks
  • Intricate intaglios and beads
  • Shoes, jewellery, and other personal possessions

With the support of National Museums Scotland, Live Borders and private collectors, we have one of the finest displays of Roman and Iron Age finds north of the Wall. Come and see for yourself and learn more about life at the very edge of the Empire.

For Children

Children have a great time at Trimontium and can be Roman Scouts, seeking out missing Roman soldiers hidden around the museum. They can also use clues to identify different animals represented by items on display and leave offerings at their favourite things on display. All our intrepid scouts can choose a treat at the end of their visit, as long as their commanding officers allow it!

If your child is too young to be a Roman scout, you are welcome to bring buggies and prams into the museum, or leave them at reception if you prefer. You are welcome to breastfeed in the museum and we have seats and a sofa available for use but if you should want a private space in which to do this, please let us know. Changing facilities are not operational as yet but we are working on it.
