Aug 16th 2022 | Rob Longworth

The summer season at Scotland’s only museum dedicated to the Roman & Iron Age story of The Borders & beyond is well underway and visitors from near & far have been enjoying the treasures on display in Melrose and the unique Roman fort site of Trimontium.

The Trimontium Trust are now pleased to announce the release of a brand new mobile app that provides brand new imagery, narration, Roman finds from the fort and further fascinating detail of the largest Roman fort in Scotland.

The mobile app was designed and built with thanks to a groundbreaking partnership between The Trimontium Trust & South of Scotland Destination Alliance (SSDA), South of Scotland Enterprise (SoSE), University of St Andrews (Open Virtual Worlds). Content created by The Trust’s own team and would not have been possible without support and contributions from National Museums Scotland (NMS) & Fleming Woelfell 3D Imaging.

Ross McAuley, Chief Executive of the South of Scotland Destination Alliance, which supported the Museum in developing their app, said:

“At the SSDA we’re working in partnership with tourism and cultural businesses all over the region to attract more holidaymakers to discover the South of Scotland. We’re delighted that our Stories project helped facilitate this endeavour, which allows virtual and in-person visitors from all over the world to explore the South of Scotland’s Roman history.

“Congratulations to everyone at Trimontium for all their hard work. Resources like this app really put the South of Scotland on the map and I’m sure it will entice future visitors to discover the area and the enormous wealth of unforgettable things to do and places to see. This is a landscape absolutely brimming with amazing stories just waiting to be explored!”

The resulting app takes the user on a virtual tour of the Trimontium Roman fort site, using the latest 360 degree landscape photography and historic reconstructions to place the user in the living landscape of a 2nd century Roman frontier fort. The app can be used as you tour the site or sit in the comfort of your own home – with the added bonus that more objects & stories from the fort site can then be viewed in person at the Trimontium Museum in Melrose.

Head to your App Store and search for Trimontium. The App will appear as Via Trimontia (Apple) or Trimontium Roman Fort (Play Store).
