Our December Trimontium Talk examines the incredible Power of Images.

Deliberately chosen imperial imagery influenced the public and private perception of political and military power in Rome. But the fine line between information and propaganda is not always clearly drawn. When looking closer, the reality behind this symbolism and an image of the Roman army beyond glory and victory will emerge. Illustrations used in museum exhibitions and re-enactment events bring the fascination for the Roman military closer to an interested public. We will showcase that the Roman army was a highly efficient war machine, apart from its gleaming equipment and troop parades. We also discuss less popular topics such as violence, defeated opponents or ransacked cities.

Martina Meyr is head of the municipal museums in Rottweil, and Dr. Christof Flügel is head of the department for museum counseling, consultant for archaeological museums and regional consultant for Upper Bavaria at the State Office for Non-State Museums in Bavaria. Both have been working on the adoption of imperial imagery in the north-western provinces of the Roman Empire, particularly on frontiers and in the borderlands.
