In this change to the previously advertised programme (Dr Barbara Birley will now be speaking in our Autumn 2023 series) Dr John Reid, Trust Chair, will share some insights into the extraordinary story of the loss of the Ninth Hispanic Legion sometime in the second century AD. Based on research for his forthcoming book on Roman Scotland, The Eagle and the Bear, John will examine what may really have happened to the ‘unlucky Ninth’. Was it transferred to the East to fizzle out in some unrecorded battle or is there any new evidence to support the old theory (and Rosemary Sutcliff’s famous story) that it was lost in the mists of Scotland? Sign up and find out.

Members will be sent link a few days before the event.

Non members can sign up using the booking link.
